Brazil 1–3 Portugal

The match that knocked Brazil out of the 1966 World Cup, remembered for the fouls on Pelé.

Brazil needed to beat Portugal at Goodison Park to have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals. Pelé was brought back, though not fully fit.

António Simões and Eusébio put Portugal 2–0 up in the first half. The defender João Morais fouled Pelé twice, and the English referee George McCabe did not send him off. Pelé could barely run for the rest of the evening. Rildo pulled a goal back, and Eusébio scored again five minutes from time.

Brazil were out. Pelé said afterwards he would not play at another World Cup. The crowd was 58,479.

Portugal went on to finish third, and Eusébio was the tournament's top scorer with nine goals. It was the last time Pelé played at the tournament until Mexico, four years later.
