Match · 24 June 1958 · Semi-final
Brazil 5–2 France
The 1958 semi-final in which Pelé scored a second-half hat-trick, the youngest player ever to do so at a World Cup.
Brazil met France at the Råsunda Stadium in Solna. Vavá scored after two minutes and Just Fontaine equalised. Didi put Brazil 2–1 ahead before half-time. France lost their captain, Robert Jonquet, to a broken leg in the first half and played on with ten men, as substitutes were not allowed.
In the second half Pelé scored three times, in the 52nd, 64th and 75th minutes. Roger Piantoni pulled one back late on, and Brazil won 5–2.
Pelé was 17 years and 244 days old. He remains the youngest player to score a hat-trick at a World Cup. The crowd was 27,100.
Fontaine's goal was one of the 13 he scored at that tournament, still the record for a single World Cup. The Welsh referee was Benjamin Griffiths. The win took Brazil into their first World Cup final; in 1950, on home soil, the title had been decided in a final group, not a final.
