The Rio de Janeiro club Pelé scored his 1,000th goal against, from a penalty at the Maracanã in November 1969.
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama is one of Rio de Janeiro's big clubs. On 19 November 1969 they lost 2–1 to Santos at the Maracanã. Pelé's winning penalty, past the Argentine goalkeeper Edgardo Andrada, was counted as his 1,000th goal.
