FIFA World Cup 1962

Brazil's second World Cup title, won in Chile after Pelé was injured in the second match.

The seventh World Cup was played in Chile from 30 May to 17 June 1962. Pelé, now 21, was widely seen as the best player in the world.

In Brazil's first match, against Mexico in Viña del Mar, he set up the first goal for Zagallo and scored the second himself in a 2–0 win. In the second match, against Czechoslovakia, he was hurt while trying a long-range shot. Substitutes were not allowed, so he stayed on, and the game ended 0–0. He did not play again in the tournament.

Garrincha led the team in his absence, and Amarildo came into the side. Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3–1 in the final in Santiago.

At the time only players who appeared in the final received medals. FIFA changed the rule in 1978, and Pelé was given his 1962 winner's medal in 2007.

Garrincha was named the tournament's best player and shared the top scorer's prize with five others, including Vavá. Brazil became the second country, after Italy, to win two World Cups in a row.

Brazil's path was Mexico (2–0), Czechoslovakia (0–0) and Spain (2–1) in the group, then England (3–1) in the quarter-final, Chile (4–2) in the semi-final and Czechoslovakia again in the final, watched by 68,679 people at the Estadio Nacional.
