Copa Libertadores 1963
Santos's second straight South American title, won against Boca Juniors; Pelé scored the winner in Buenos Aires.
As holders, Santos went straight into the semi-finals of the 1963 Copa Libertadores. There they beat Botafogo, whose team included Garrincha and Jairzinho.
In the final against Boca Juniors, Santos won 3–2 at the Maracanã on 3 September. In the second leg at Boca's ground in Buenos Aires on 11 September, Coutinho equalised and Pelé scored the winner eight minutes from time for a 2–1 win.
Pelé scored five goals in the tournament, joint second behind Boca's José Sanfilippo.
The first leg at the Maracanã drew 100,000 people. Coutinho scored twice and Lima added a third, before Sanfilippo's late goal made it 3–2. Santos had won the competition twice in its first four years, both times with Pelé.
It was part of a busy year in which Santos also won the Torneio Rio–São Paulo, the Taça Brasil and, later, the Intercontinental Cup.
The second leg drew 50,000 people to Boca's stadium. Sanfilippo put Boca ahead just after half-time, Coutinho equalised, and Pelé scored the winner in the 82nd minute. The final was decided on points: two wins gave Santos four points to Boca's none. The French referee Marcel Bois took charge of both legs. Pelé was 22 at the time.
