Intercontinental Cup 1963
Santos's second world club title, won against AC Milan after a play-off in Rio, with Pelé playing only the first leg.
In 1963 Santos met AC Milan, the European champions. In the first leg at the San Siro on 16 October, Milan won 4–2. Pelé scored both Santos goals, the second from a penalty.
He did not play in the return leg or the play-off. Santos won the second leg 4–2 at the Maracanã, and because the competition was decided on points, a play-off was held two days later at the same stadium. Santos won it 1–0 with a penalty from Dalmo.
Both Rio matches were controversial. Milan complained about the refereeing of the Argentine official Juan Brozzi, and Milan's captain Cesare Maldini was sent off in the play-off.
The second leg at the Maracanã drew 132,728 people and the play-off 120,421. Santos's winner in the play-off came from a penalty that many reporters considered a dive. Even so, Santos became the first club to win the Intercontinental Cup twice in a row.
Pelé captained Santos in the first leg, in which Giovanni Trapattoni, Amarildo (twice) and Bruno Mora scored for Milan. In the second leg Milan led 2–0 at half-time; Santos scored four in the second half, three of them from free kicks. The referee, Brozzi, was later expelled by his own federation.
