The final was played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 21 June 1970, before 107,412 people. In the 18th minute Pelé, marked by Tarcisio Burgnich, headed in Rivellino's cross. It was Brazil's 100th goal at World Cups.

Roberto Boninsegna equalised after a defensive mistake. In the second half Gérson scored from long range. Pelé then headed a long free kick down for Jairzinho to make it 3–1.

The last goal is one of the most replayed in football. The move passed through most of the team, and Pelé, without looking, rolled the ball into the path of Carlos Alberto, who struck it in from the right. Brazil won 4–1, and Pelé became the first player to win three World Cups.

The referee was Rudi Glöckner of East Germany. Mário Zagallo became the first man to win the World Cup as a player and as a coach. Carlos Alberto's goal was later voted 36th in a British poll of the greatest sporting moments, and the Italian defender who marked Pelé, Tarcisio Burgnich, later said he had underestimated him.
