Brazil's second match in Chile was against Czechoslovakia in Viña del Mar. During the match Pelé hurt himself while trying a long-range shot.

Substitutes were not yet allowed, so he stayed on the pitch, unable to play a full part. The match finished 0–0.

He missed the rest of the tournament. Brazil met Czechoslovakia again in the final and won 3–1. The crowd in Viña del Mar was 14,903.

Brazil still had to beat Spain in their last group match. Amarildo, from Botafogo, came in for Pelé and scored both goals in a 2–1 win. Later, at a time when only players in the final received medals, Pelé went without one; FIFA presented him with a winner's medal for 1962 in 2007.
