Uruguay had beaten Brazil in the deciding match of the 1950 World Cup at the Maracanã. In the 1970 semi-final they scored first, but Brazil won 3–1. Pelé did not score, but his dummy on goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz became one of the best-known moments of the tournament.
