- Year: 1970
- Result: Champions
- His matches: 6
- His goals: 4

The ninth World Cup was played in Mexico from 31 May to 21 June 1970. Pelé was 29. He had first refused to rejoin the national team in 1969, then agreed, and scored six goals in six qualifiers.

Coached by Mário Zagallo, Brazil played an attacking side with Jairzinho, Gérson, Tostão, Rivellino and Pelé. They won all six matches. Pelé scored against Czechoslovakia and twice against Romania in the group stage. Between those games came the 1–0 win over England, in which Gordon Banks made his save from Pelé's header.

Brazil beat Peru 4–2 in the quarter-final and Uruguay 3–1 in the semi-final. In the final against Italy at the Estadio Azteca, Pelé headed the first goal and set up two more in a 4–1 win.

He finished with four goals and is credited with six assists. FIFA later named him the tournament's best player, awarding him the Golden Ball retrospectively. Brazil's third title let them keep the Jules Rimet Trophy, and Pelé became the only player to win three World Cups.

It was the first World Cup broadcast live around the world, and in a few places in colour, so this Brazil team was seen by more people than any before it. Brazil's 1970 team is often called the greatest in history. Jairzinho scored in every match, Carlos Alberto captained the side, and Zagallo became the first man to win the World Cup as player and coach.
