Match · 19 June 1958 · Quarter-final
Brazil 1–0 Wales
The quarter-final in which Pelé scored his first World Cup goal, the only goal of the match, at 17.
Wales had reached the quarter-finals of their only World Cup of the century by drawing all three group games and beating Hungary in a play-off. In Gothenburg they held Brazil for 66 minutes.
Then Pelé scored. At 17 years and 239 days, he became the youngest scorer in World Cup history at the time. It was the only goal of the game, and it took Brazil into the semi-finals.
The crowd at Ullevi was 25,923.
Brazil went on to meet France in the semi-final five days later. The referee was the Austrian Fritz Seipelt.
Brazil had needed most of the match to break Wales down. It was the first of three knockout games in a row in which Pelé scored, a run that continued against France in the semi-final and Sweden in the final.
