Person
Gordon Banks
Gordon Banks (1937–2019), England's World Cup-winning goalkeeper, who made the famous save from Pelé's header in 1970.
Gordon Banks kept goal for England when they won the 1966 World Cup. In Guadalajara in 1970 he dived across his goal to push Pelé's downward header over the bar, a save often called the greatest ever made. Banks said people would remember him for that save more than for winning the World Cup. He and Pelé became friends, and Pelé unveiled a statue of him at Stoke in 2008.
