Match · 7 June 1970 · Group stage
Brazil 1–0 England
The 1970 group match between the holders and Brazil, remembered for Gordon Banks's save from Pelé's header.
England were world champions, and this match in Guadalajara was the most awaited of the first round. It kicked off at noon, in front of 66,843 people.
Jairzinho crossed from the right and Pelé headed the ball down towards the corner. Gordon Banks dived across, got his hand to it as it bounced and turned it over the bar. It is often called the save of the century.
In the 59th minute Pelé laid the ball off to Jairzinho, who scored the only goal. At the end Pelé and the England captain Bobby Moore swapped shirts and embraced. The photograph of that moment is often used to show sportsmanship.
Banks had been told the day before that he would be made an OBE. The match did not decide the group, as both teams went through, but it was the meeting most people wanted to see. England went out in the quarter-finals to West Germany, with Banks unable to play because of illness.
