Intercontinental Cup 1962
Santos's first world club title, won against Benfica in 1962; Pelé scored five goals in the two legs.
The Intercontinental Cup matched the champions of Europe and South America. In 1962 it was Benfica, with Eusébio, against Santos, with Pelé.
In the first leg at the Maracanã on 19 September, Santos won 3–2 and Pelé scored twice. In the second leg in Lisbon on 11 October, in front of 73,000 people, he scored a hat-trick in a 5–2 win.
Wikipedia describes the Lisbon match as the finest performance ever seen in the competition. Benfica's goalkeeper, Costa Pereira, is quoted there as saying he had come hoping to stop a great man but left feeling beaten by someone not born on the same planet.
The first leg drew 85,459 people to the Maracanã. Benfica's two goals in Rio came from Santana; in Lisbon, Eusébio and Santana scored only after Santos led 5–0. Pelé's seven goals across 1962 and 1963 make him the competition's all-time top scorer, and he is the only player to score a hat-trick in it.
In the first leg Pelé scored in the 31st and 85th minutes and Coutinho in the 64th. Santos were coached by Lula, and their side included Gilmar, Zito, Coutinho and Pepe as well as Pelé. The Paraguayan Rubén Cabrera refereed the first leg and the Frenchman Pierre Schwinte the second.
