Match · 11 October 1962 · Intercontinental Cup, second leg
Santos 5–2 Benfica
Santos's 5–2 win in Lisbon that won the 1962 Intercontinental Cup, with a Pelé hat-trick.
Santos had won the first leg 3–2 in Rio. The return match was played at Benfica's Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on 11 October 1962, before 73,000 people.
Pelé scored in the 15th and 25th minutes, Coutinho added a third early in the second half, and Pelé completed his hat-trick in the 64th minute. Pepe made it 5–0 before Eusébio and Santana scored late for Benfica.
Santos became world club champions. The match is often described as one of the best performances of Pelé's career.
Benfica had won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962. The tie is remembered as a meeting of Pelé and Eusébio, the two leading forwards of the 1960s, who faced each other only three times. The French referee was Pierre Schwinte. Afterwards Benfica's goalkeeper, Costa Pereira, said he had felt beaten by someone not of this world.
