Brazil 4–1 Czechoslovakia
Brazil's first match of the 1970 World Cup, in which Pelé scored and almost scored from his own half.
Brazil opened the 1970 World Cup at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara. Ladislav Petráš put Czechoslovakia ahead in the 11th minute, and Rivellino equalised from a free kick.
In the 59th minute Pelé put Brazil ahead, becoming the second player after Uwe Seeler to score at four World Cups. Later in the game he saw the goalkeeper, Ivo Viktor, standing off his line and shot from inside his own half. The ball went just wide. Jairzinho scored twice more.
The crowd was 52,897.
It was Brazil's first match under Mário Zagallo at the finals and the first sign of how freely the new team would attack. The two sides had also met in the 1962 final, when Brazil won 3–1.
